Introduction

Spring 2009  Art 520

I am excited about painting this semester and I hope to challenge myself with further research into expressive portrait painting.  I plan to continue to focus on painting portraits and I would like to paint at least one large landscape painting.  I enjoy painting people that are close to me. It is a personal way for me to stay connected to the people that I love.  I believe that there is something spiritual about creating art for or about other people.  I form an inner connection to my subject, especially when my subject is my family or friends.  I like to paint people in a natural light and a natural environment. What I want to say with my work is:  Stop and enjoy the moment.  It is fleeting and can be easily overlooked.  Everyone is so rushed, so busy, and so caught up in the daily grind, the news, the pressures.  I want my audience to be able to look at my work, and then look at themselves.  Hopefully my viewer can begin to recognize and appreciate the fleeting moments in his or her own life.

This is the painting that I started over Christmas vacation.  The figures seem very stiff, especially the girl.  I want to try to freshen it up.  It is acrylic 24" by 36" in size.  I want to achieve more of a painterly, fresh style.  I am considering loosing up the background, so that the focus is on my figures.  Suggestions???
My next project.  I like having two going at a time.  This is from a photograph taken of my husband.  I am going for that spontaneous feel again...with natural light.  I have a loose sketch started and I am starting to lay in the values.
