Glossary Affirmative Action: Affirmative action is a policy that gives preference to a minority with the goal of making up for past or current discrimination against them. Civil Rights Act of 1964: The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was legislation that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in the U.S. It was originally conceived to protect the rights of Black people, but itl was amended before passing to protect the civil rights of everyone, including women for the first time. Constitutional Protections: Constitutional guarantees that God given individual rights can not be taken away by the government. Jim Crow Laws: Jim Crow laws were laws enacted by state and local governments in the Southern and border states in force from 1876 at the ends of Reconstruction to 1964 that required racial segregation in all public facilities. Race Relations: The general concept of interactions between racial or ethnic groups within a society, most commonly used in connection with the interactions of White and African-American races in the United States. Segregation: The practice of keeping races separate even when doing the same thing. Examples of this practice are separate schools for each race, separate drinking fountains, separate seating in transportation, or separate restaurants.
