Teacher Website Support

1.  Installing Microsoft FrontPage 2000.
You can build your website using Microsoft FrontPage 2000.  If you do not have this program installed please follow directions below.

 High School and Middle School

On Your Desktop you will see a folder called Application Explorer.  Open it and then Double click on All.  Find the icon that says
FrontPage2000 and Double click it.  This will Install FrontPage 2000 and reboot your computer.  It is then ready to use.

2.  Building your web site.

Once you have Front Page installed, you may build your website.  It will by default want to save it on your local hard drive.  Keep in mind this is not backed up.  A better solution would be to save it to your Home drive (N).  Also keep in mind, it is a good idea to keep it small and graphics to a minimum.  Please be aware that this can be viewed outside the school and not to put any information that you do not want made public.

The number one thing to remember is that your home page must be saved as index.htm  If this is not done, when you publish it will say page not found, or you will still get the default home page.  You must remember to do this.  The other pages you create can be named anything you would like, but the homepage or main page must be named index.htm

The main common mistake people make is to many graphics and graphics that are to large.  This can take forever to load over a dialup connection at home.  Also keep your font small so it will not take up to much space.  Find other commercial websites that you like and use what they have done for your own ideas.

3.  Publishing your new website to the World Wide Web.

After you have created your website, you need to publish so everyone can view it.  The first time you do this it will be a little involved.  After the first time, Front page will remember your settings and you will just be able to click publish and not have to go through all the steps below.

To publish your new website, click on the publish icon on the toolbar, or click File on the menu bar and then click publish web.
Once you click publish web, you will get a publish web dialogue box.  Click on the browse button.  From the drop down menu select Network Neighborhood, then select Entire Network, then select Netware Servers, then select WEB1, then select Web, then select hsdweb, then select either Middle School or High School or Elementary School, depending on where you teach, then select users, then select your user folder, then click open.

Once you have done the above steps, click publish.  It will give you a message saying that files have been changed, do you want to replace them.  Select yes.  It should take a minute and then tell you it is done.

4.  Viewing Your web site.

You can then launch Internet Explorer and view your website.  Remember, you will have to click on the refresh button to see the changes you have just made.

The next time you publish, you should not have to show FrontPage the path.  Just click on publish and it will immediately publish your pages without further steps.

Common Problems

Q. I just published my website, but when I view it in Internet Explorer, nothing has changed,
A.  You need to click the refresh button In Internet Explorer.  If this does not help, try publishing again.

Q.  I just published my web site, but all I see after viewing it and clicking refresh is the default page.
A.  You do not have a file named index.htm in your user folder.  You must save your homepage as index.htm in the root folder when you make your web page.  You cannot have it inside of another folder.
